Tutorial : Digital painting

We were told to try painting using photoshop in class. so this is what i came up with.

hahahahahahaa! i know it looks really silly. especially the outlines. i don't have a steady hand, so i guess i have to work on that. should have started with soft strokes and opacity so i didn't have to re-draw the ugly outlines. guess i'll learn from my mistake and do better on my next painting. :)
*yea i added the scribble of my name for a personal touch. it looks stupid now. LOL*

Surrealism Artwork tutorial : Surreal Representation of The Mind

The background. combined and edited the colours, the sky and changed the floor to a perspective view.

Added the ladie's head and removed the top part of her head. Then created the hollow shape using stamp tool.

Then i shaded her face using the burn tool. Added the clock and paper boat. Adjusted them by rotating using the transform tool. then shaded some areas to create shadows.

Added the suitcase and book. did the same tricks from above.

placed gauge 1. created shadows underneath, and made the gauge darker.

Placed gauge 2. Also created shadows underneath but only made the gauge darker at the bottom half.

Inserted this paper image to add texture using the blending mode and layer opacity.

Added this texture and did the same. The picture below was the results of both the textures.

After adding and adjusting using the solid colour, Exposure, photo filter, brightness/contrast and levels. The picture above is the final result! the picture turned out slightly darker than expected and its not perfect, but i'm really satisfied. *pats myself on the back* haha.

Research on Art movement : Impressionism

I decided to do a research on impressionism art movement because i like it most out of the 14 art movement that my lecturer gave. The impressionism paintings are mainly focused on the general impression produced by a scene or object  and the use of  unmixed primary colours and small strokes to create an illusion of actual reflected light. impressionism paintings are usually from people's everyday scenes, normal activity, and landscapes instead of historical, religious or mythological subjects. I noticed that most impressionist artists vibrant and light colours, and sometimes mixed directly on the canvas to create strong contrast compared to the traditional paintings. The brushwork looks quick and spontaneous  as most impressionism painting aren't very 'clean' or 'tidy'.

My favorite impressionism artwork is by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) because most of his artworks depicts dancers and their movement. I think the reason i really like his artwork is because i'm a dancer myself, and i feel like i can 'read' what he is trying to picture or describe.

Ballet Rehearsal, 1873, The Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts SOURCE
my opinion : The dancers are rehearsing for a performance the good ones are usually at the front, and there is a girl who is lost so she stopped and watched the rest dance and she will try to follow and keep up. Another dancer probably came late for the rehearsal so she just started stretching by the wall. the other two dancers are probably discussing about their costumes. The girl at the front is probably the star of the show, so she is resting and watching the rest practice. i like how he painted the dancers legs when their are in that position, it looks very 'real'. Also like how the walls of the room is painted that way. Makes the room looks very old and it shows that the academy had been there for a long time.

Edgar Degas - Rehearsal of the Scene - Musée d'Orsay, Paris  SOURCE
mu opinion : The dancers are rehearsing the most important scene, and the master is watching the main dancer of the show practicing. i like how the ballet dancers are in blue and the bows are in different colours. their tutu/skirt is very detailed and it somehow shows the 'fluffiness' of the skirt. The ceiling details are also very attractive, the colours it makes it look so classic and prestigious.

Dancer with a Bouquet of Flowers (Star of the Ballet), 1878  SOURCE
my opnion : This is definitely after a grand performance, and as shown in the painting title, she was the star of the performance. She must have been the main dancer and character for the ballet troop. She was given the bouquet of flowers for putting on a great show, and she looks really happy about it. The rest of the dancers are at the back, sharing their excitement and experience after the show. Again, the colours and the way the tutu/skirt is painted is AMAZING! the trees and bushes were not given much attention compared to the dancers, i think he was trying to make the dancer as the attention item of the painting.

Edgar Degas - Dance Class, 1871- The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City  SOURCE
my opinion : This interpretation is similar as the first picture above, but instead of a rehearsal it is just a normal practice or class. i like how the movement and the position of the dancers are all different. The colour scheme on this painting is really nice. i also like how the dancers look harmonize with the background and the walls. the shading gave so much depth to the painting.

Another impressionism artist that i like is Alfred Sisley (1839-1899). He paints Landscapes and his works strongly invokes atmosphere and his skies are always impressive. he concentrated on landscapes more consistently than any other impressionist painter.

Black and White

I don't really know what is the real situation or meaning of this picture, but when i looked at it all that was in my mind was that this little girl was probably with her parents at the labor working site or construction site under the scorching sun and the little girl either found a empty can of pepsi on the ground and picked it up to drink any remaining liquid out of it or a passerby gave this girl a can of pepsi to drink. The little girl's face showed hope and eagerness while she was holding the can against her lips. It just touched me because it depicts and shows poverty. Same goes to the picture below.

The little girl with her tiny pigtails knots on her hair was probably being showered by her parent beside the well in their village. Her brother was probably waiting for his sister to finish so he can dry up since he took his shower before her. He looked like he was cold and shivering. both the children's ribcage were obvious and the little girl's tummy was bloated. Shows that they have not been eating well and the opportunity for them to clean and wash their body was probably not often and only once in awhile.

Field Trip : Central Market

A picture heavy post.
Our third field trip was at Central Market in Kuala Lumpur.
there were very few of us that went on that day, but i really enjoyed walking around the market and looking at all the colourful things around the place.

this was the entrance.

some of the structures and statues outside Central Market.

some of the souvenirs that were sold.
hand crafts.

Chinese calligraphy and water colour painting.

hand made bracelets and necklaces.

Then we went along a road and i was literally awestruck because i saw many paintings and artworks at that area.
Portrait sketch of John lennon and Angelina Jolie.

portraits of ministers and famous people from malaysia

This artist was painting a portrait of a lady by referring to her photo. the painting looks so real and alike.

The artist's palette and the colours he used.

Caricatures.
A man was cleaning the drawing that was done with ink and pen. It was the scenery of Kuala Lumpur City.

Side profile sketching of an indian lady. I love how detail the drawing is, especially on her jeweleries.

At another artist's shop where he does his sketching, colouring and drawing using oil and soft pastels.

there was even a potrait of Prince William.

I was happy that i could see him do the pastel artwork and how he does the shading and colouring, because i have never seen a portrait done with oil and soft pastels.
the picture he was reffering to and the pastels he used.

Oil and acrylic painting.

the acrylic paints and pastels the artist used. So many colours was on the block of wood that he used as his palette.

Same picture and drawing but is coloured three different ways. Really nice to look at how colours can change the mood and look of a picture.

some of the oil paintings outside the shop.

a colourful and bright oil painting using the dotting technique that caught my attention. So pretty and nice to look at.

I was really impressed with the sand artwork of this man. he fills in and arranges sand in the bottle to form a pattern or design that is really detailed and precised.

he was doing an elephant design while we were watching.
and Tada!!! the picture below was the end result. Amazing!

Some of his other sand artwork ;

Then we visited the Amerian and Chinese pop art gallery. I could only take a picture of the banner coz we weren't allowed to take any pictures in the gallery, but all the painting inside was really awesome. The colours were very bold, bright and the patterns were very distinct and it easily caught my attention.

Batik Artwork in the batik Gallery.

This is a really cool painting that i bumped into. Our lecturer took a picture of it and showed it to us, so i went around searching for it. Wish i could have this picture, but like most beautiful painting, it was really pricey.

Lastly, A picture of me and the painting i really liked.

i also saw the Graffiti artwork along the river near the lrt station, but my phone ran out of battery so i couldn't take any pictures of it. Overall, it was a great experience for me looking at all the artwork and crafts around the market. I would definitely go over to central market again. I also think that it is a wonderful place for tourist to go to since most of the things inside the market are mostly very traditional and portrays Malaysia very well.
